Examplary projects

Production capacity allocation (semiconductor) – Production was split among three different sites across the globe, where most product groups were produced at a single site. The question was if capacities could be better utilized by shifting production between sites, which would – for most products – require establishing new production capabilities and hence, modifying the footprint. We addressed the question with an analytics concept and a prototype optimization model. A precondition was creating transparency regarding the existing production capacities. The network optimization model predicted that the ability to re-locate production does in fact improve utilization and customer order lead times. ​

Industry footprint optimization (circular economies) – The client planned to establish new cities and industrial areas with a focus on sustainability. To that end, factories and treatment facilities should be located such that waste products could be reused, recycled, or upcycled decreasing the total waste of the system. We addressed the problem by building a dashboard and a mathematical model to determine the target layout of the entire region as well as the roadmap to get there. The optimization model determined the location of factories and the flows of commodities as well as the additional infrastructure needed to enable these flows. ​

Distribution strategy and network optimization (retail) – The client needed guidance on defining its distribution strategy in a competitive environment. To choose among several distribution strategies and to determine the best footprint for each of these, we have built a mathematical optimization model targeted at finding the best trade-off between speed-to-customer, operating costs, and capital expenditures. The model included several distribution channels (brick-and-mortar business, e-commerce, dropshipping) and multi-mode shipments. At the end of the project, management was able to make an informed decision.​

Production footprint optimization (foodstuff) – The client needed to consolidate its production network to compete with low-cost vendors entering the marked. Therefore, we have built a mathematical model to optimize the production and distribution footprint re-locating the production lines from the shut-down sites. At the end of the project, management knew which sites should be kept and the model was used for further analyses. ​
