Involved in the testing and development and certification (ATA 71, 73, 74, 76, 77, 78) of the Trent XWB turbofan designated to power the Airbus A350 airliner. Maintained validation, verification and certification packages to ensure compliance. Organised instrumentation design and ensured acquisition of test data, to demonstrate that compliance was managed efficiently and also arranged and supported the build, test and strip cycle(s) for development engines in accordance with the Engine Development Plan (EDP) and certification processes in preparation for Entry into Service (EIS).

Performed functional system safety tasks for the fuel system (ATA 28) of the Airbus A350 XWB aircraft. Included review of the fuel system and other related system architectures and the creation and analysis of fault trees using the Fault Tree Plus and SARAA software. Authored for the Airbus A350 fuel system Preliminary System Safety Assessment (PSSA) and the Manufacturer’s Minimum Equipment List (MMEL) documents for submission to EASA.

Performed aerodynamic, aeroelastic, stress and vibration analysis, heat transfer and anti-icing analysis of LiftFan and the compressor section of F136 engine for use in the Lockheed-Martin F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter (JSF). This involved meshing the relevant geometries and the use of various CFD and FEA codes including ICEM-CFD, Fluent, MSES, AU3D, SC03 codes and the use of relevant experimental data for validation.

Carried out CATIA V5 CAD design work on EADS Eurocopter NH-90 helicopter geometry to modify the airframe to represent various search and rescue mission platforms and scenarios. Modelled these scenarios in CFD as part of a performance prediction exercise for a United Kingdom Ministry of Defence evaluation.

Modelled fluid flows of Airbus aircraft fuel systems using, the Fluent CFD software. Involved extensive use of CATIA V5 for geometry creation and clean-up and the use of various meshing tools as well as coding in C++. Generated CFD models for fuel sloshing load cases for NASTRAN and ABAQUS FEA software.

Carried out CATIA V5 geometry creation, clean up, meshing and submission of complex, full-car, CFD files to model the racing cars for the WSC and German Touring (DTM) car programmes. Files were characterised by the inclusion of detailed exterior, under hood and interior geometric details. Projects included the Le Mans winning R8 and R10 cars.

Wind tunnel and CFD investigations into low speed, high-lift and transonic flows for nacelle-pylon-wing and flap track fairing (FTF) integration on the A320 and A350 and A400M aircraft. Project managed A350 FTF design between UK and German offices.. Involved CAD work using CATIA V4.2 and CATIA V5 and the use of the Flite 3D and Solar-Tau CFD codes. Investigated various load cases for FEA and aeroelastics and flutter studies for ground and flight shape wings.

Trained in the Exa Powerflow Lattice-Boltzmann CFD software suite. Supported various clients in England and continental Europe. These included BMW, Audi, Nissan, MIRA, Jaguar and Land Rover. Helped to develop code methodology for Formula One and other types of motorsport. Used the software to model various types of problems with an emphasis on time dependent aerodynamics. Project managed and developed these according to client needs.

Created the Formula One Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) group based on a multi-discipline CFD code philosophy. Integrated the functioning of CFD group into the design office structure. Designed and supervised experimental wind tunnel and on-track validation tests to correlate with steady state and transient part and full-car solutions. Created load cases to allow for weight reduction and to predict aeroelastic deflection of aerodynamic components so that actual underway shapes and aerodynamics could be modelled. Also created meshes for Finite Element Analysis (FEA) cases using NASTRAN software on complex gearbox models.

Managed the company’s Formula 3 and Formula Atlantic experimental and CFD programmes. Also responsible for the validation of numerical predictions with wind tunnel models and full size car performance using the PI data acquisition software. Advised teams on aerodynamic changes during race weekends. Designed and drew components.
